Investing In Gemstones 5 Feb 2019

As with many of the jewellers here in thriving Hatton Garden, we manage to source some of the finest gemstones in the world. But, how do we know which gemstones to invest in? This blog post covers some of the key parts of the process in how we do what we do, as well as useful information on how investing in gemstones, could be a smart move for you.

The very beginning of the whole process we go through always begins with the gemstones being mined and cut from the rough, subject to widely accepted gemstone mining trade practices of which go back many hundreds of years. They then undergo a number of changes and processes, including heat enhancement which gently improves the gemstone, altering its colour to both refine and allow it to reach its’ full-colour potential, a different stage from when it was first found in the ground.

These changes allow gemstones to go from being a rough object through to fine, finished gems that are ready to be shown to potential customers or even, made into exquisite items of jewellery. Our close partnerships with gemstone suppliers around the globe mean that we only import the finest stones, which is why we are so widely recognised for being specialists within the gemstone field especially with regards to genuine rubies, genuine sapphires and rare gems.

The most top-quality gems that we sell, and of which are the most valuable to invest in, are the gemstones which have had no enhancement between the stages of them being first mined through to when they are offered for sale.

Over the past twenty years the value of these ‘natural’ or ‘unheated’ gems, have significantly increased in price and are considered to be a hugely valuable investment. Determining that a stone has not been heat-treated is something that only experienced Gemologists would be able to detect using high-tech tools and because they are so rare in this form, means that they are highly expensive.

As an example, a top-quality ruby which would originate from Burma purchased in the late 1980s and that has been spared any enhancement, has the potential to have increased 10 times in value in that period of time.

If you’re looking to invest in gemstones, our team will be more than happy to help. Our adept industry knowledge allows us to educate clients in which items they’d be best investing in that would increase in value as the years go on.
