Why and Where do we Import our Gemstones from? 3 Jan 2019

Sico International has been based in the heart of London’s jewellery district, Hatton Garden since 1996. During those 22 years, we’ve become true industry experts with all of the gems and jewellery that we stock. We primarily specialise in rubies, sapphires and diamonds, but what’s the story behind our incredible gems and how do we manage to source the finest ones?

Our sapphires are always sourced from either Sri Lanka, Thailand, Burma or Kashmir and always has been since we first opened. These areas are the very best in the world for finding the finest sapphire gemstones that, believe it or not, vary in colour from the traditional blue to white, yellow, orange, purple and even green varieties. Many of these places home some of the rarest and most beautiful sapphires in the world.

Most of our rubies have always been found in Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Thailand (for Siam rubies) and for the very best quality, Burma. Rubies from Burma are particularly unique as they possess a strong fluorescence which is a result of their low iron content. In ancient times, people even assumed there was a fire burning in these stones as their body colour is red but they also fluoresce red, firing up the colour.

With so many locations around the globe that we source our gemstones from, it’s always been incredibly important for us to have strong relationships with our suppliers. Today, we consider our suppliers as our partners as we so regularly liaise with them and work closely in sourcing the perfect stones for our business and customers.

No matter how far across the globe that our stones may be sourced from, they always arrive safe and sound. We work closely with companies who transport items of high-value which includes jewellery. This is how we rely on all of our imported goods and thankfully, allows us to work with any country in the world, meaning that we can supply the finest gems in the world.

If you’d like to find out more about the gemstones that we are so passionate about, contact a member of our team today. We love to talk about the beautiful items that we stock as well as working closely with our customers to create the perfect item of jewellery.
