How Gemstone Treatments Affect Quality, Rarity and Value

Many coloured gemstones are treated to improve their appearance, but not all treatments have the same effect on rarity or value. Heat treatment has been used for centuries to enhance colour and clarity in rubies and sapphires, while other processes may fill fractures, add colour or alter the surface of a stone. For buyers, the important issue is not simply whether treatment has occurred, but whether it has been correctly identified and openly disclosed.

Heat Treatment Is Common — but Untreated Stones Are Rarer

Heat treatment is widely accepted within the coloured gemstone market, particularly for ruby and sapphire. It can strengthen colour, improve transparency and reduce the visibility of certain inclusions. Fine untreated stones remain much scarcer, however, and exceptional examples with strong natural colour can attract a significant premium. A treatment does not automatically make a gemstone undesirable, but it changes how rarity and price should be judged.

Some Enhancements Require Greater Caution

Fracture filling, diffusion and surface coatings can produce attractive results, but they may affect durability, care requirements and market value more substantially. These stones should be priced and represented accordingly. Buyers should also understand that some enhanced gemstones require gentler cleaning and may not be suitable for every type of jewellery, particularly pieces intended for frequent wear.

Certification Creates Confidence

An independent gemmological report can identify the gemstone, describe detectable treatments and, in some cases, provide an opinion on geographic origin. For collectors, designers and private clients, this documentation creates confidence and supports accurate valuation. At SICO International, treatment history and certification form an essential part of responsible gemstone sourcing.
