Kate Middleton’s Five-Ring Tribute at a Royal Farewell

Princess Kate arriving at Westminster Cathedral in black coatdress and ring stack

The Princess of Wales made a quietly powerful statement at the funeral of the Duchess of Kent, held at Westminster Cathedral on September 16. Dressed in a classic black coatdress by Catherine Walker, Kate Middleton paired her solemn attire with a deeply symbolic stack of five rings—including her iconic sapphire engagement ring.

A Stack That Tells a Story

This was the first time the Princess has worn all five rings together on one finger, creating a layered look that blends fashion with personal meaning.

Here’s what made up the royal ring stack:

  • Her engagement ring: the legendary 12-carat Ceylon sapphire once worn by Princess Diana.

  • Wedding ring: crafted from Welsh gold, following royal tradition.

  • Cartier eternity ring: adorned with sapphires and diamonds, believed to be a gift marking the end of her preventative chemotherapy.

  • Diamond pavé band: a newer, subtly sparkling addition.

  • Annoushka eternity ring: thought to be a gift from Prince William after the birth of Prince George in 2013.

A Return to Her Most Iconic Piece

Kate’s sapphire engagement ring—often called “Big Blue”—hasn’t been seen regularly in recent months. Following her public health announcement in early 2024, many noticed she was wearing simpler eternity rings during appearances.

But for this significant event, the ring made its return, layered thoughtfully with other meaningful bands—perhaps reflecting strength, unity, and milestones in her life as a royal, a mother, and a cancer survivor.

A Tribute in Every Detail

In addition to her ring stack, the Princess wore accessories with royal significance:

  • The Japanese Pearl Choker, previously worn by Queen Elizabeth II

  • Diamond and pearl earrings, also inherited from the late Queen

Together, they formed a complete tribute—a blend of mourning, remembrance, and resilience.
